Taking care of your forklift during winter

Winter has arrived as the days are becoming shorter and the temperature is getting colder. Adverse weather has an impact on your working conditions and material handling equipment, but there are steps you can take to prepare for winter and ensure your operation runs safely.

Your safety is paramount

Operating a forklift outside in adverse weather can put your operators’ safety and well-being at risk.

Snow and ice, wet and slippery conditions, impaired vision, and other harsh weather conditions are widely ignored, resulting in more accidents and damaged equipment.

At Toyota Material Handling UK, we care about our customers' health and safety, so we have applied our experience and knowledge and put together a guide for looking after your truck this winter, to help you avoid accidents and damage to your forklift truck.

Key points to remember this winter

This winter make sure you've got the essentials covered:

  • Make sure that all truck operators are trained on how to drive in cold, wet and slippery conditions and are aware of the hazards.
  • Ensure your operators are well-protected against the elements with windproof winter clothing, warm hats and gloves, and a high-visibility vest.
  • Recognise any potential risks before operating your truck and prepare for the task at hand, such as gritting your operational areas and testing your tyres for proper pressure, quality, and life.
  • Forklifts, like any other vehicle, should be fitted with the correct winter gear, such as the appropriate tyres are installed to ensure traction and stability on slick roads, as well as weather-proof cabins (or a forklift cover) and working lights.
  • Drive with caution, adjust your driving habits to suit the weather and only drive as fast as the conditions will safely allow.
